Baptism of the Lord

Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling. (Opening Prayer)

Matthew 3:16
The heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.

St John the Baptist was horrified at the suggestion that he baptize Jesus. He tried without success to dissuade him. St John the Baptist’s baptism was for repentance. Jesus reassured him: ‘Let it be so: it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ (Matthew 3:15). In his baptism Jesus embraced his mission as the Suffering Servant. He identified with us as sinners and showed himself to be the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Jesus’ baptism also revealed God as Blessed Trinity and pointed to his own bloody baptism to come in his death on the cross. Through baptism we are immersed in Jesus’ death and resurrection: we die with him; we rise with him to eternal life.

Lord, I praise you for the amazing gift of baptism through which I became a child of God and received the new life of the Spirit.

Our Father…,   Ten Hail Marys …, Glory be…
