Already they reign with Christ: with him ‘they shall reign for ever and ever’. (CCC 1029).
I tell you most solemnly, you will see heaven laid open and, above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.
How often do you think about heaven? We may think that too much talk of heaven is escapist or wishful. We like to think we have our feet firmly rooted to the ground. Let the scriptures and the church teach us otherwise. St Paul said to the Colossians: ‘Set your affections on things above, not on things of the earth’ (Colossians 3:2). C S Lewis asked: ‘Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave with regret? There are better things ahead than we leave behind.’ In one sense heaven begins now because to live in heaven is to be with Christ. ‘For life is to be with Christ: where Christ is, there is life, there is the kingdom’
(1 Corinthians 2:9). The hope of heaven, of this kingdom makes us peacemakers today.
Lord God, we thank you for the hope of heaven. Sustain this hope in us always.
